Privacy Policy

MarkUp is a Chrome browser extension that lets you annotate live webpages and export structured change requests to AI coding assistants. This policy explains what data MarkUp accesses, what it stores, and what it does — and does not do — with any of it. MarkUp is currently in Early Access; learn more at /beta.
What data MarkUp accesses
MarkUp accesses two things during normal use:
Active tab content. When you activate the annotation overlay, MarkUp injects a canvas element and toolbar into the current tab. The extension reads the page’s DOM to detect CSS selectors for elements you annotate. This data is processed locally and used only to populate the CSS selector field in your export changelog. It is never transmitted anywhere.
Screenshot of the active tab. When you trigger an export, MarkUp captures a screenshot of the visible tab using Chrome’s native chrome.tabs.captureVisibleTab API. For full-page exports, MarkUp scrolls the page and stitches multiple captures together locally. The resulting image is written to your clipboard or to a local folder you designate. It is not sent to any server.
Current page URL. MarkUp uses the current tab’s URL as a session key to save and restore your annotations when you return to the same page. The URL is stored locally in chrome.storage.local and is never transmitted.
What data MarkUp stores locally
All data MarkUp stores lives on your device, in your browser’s local extension storage (chrome.storage.local). This storage is scoped to the MarkUp extension and is not readable by websites or other extensions.
MarkUp stores:
- Annotation sessions — the drawings and labels you create on a given page, keyed to that page’s URL
- Workspace folder handles — references to local folders you designate as export destinations using the browser’s File System Access API
- Workspace names — the names you assign to saved folders in the Workspace Manager
- Extension settings and preferences — tool defaults, color choices, and other configuration you set within MarkUp
None of this data is backed up to a cloud service, synchronized with any server, or accessible to Implement AI or any third party.
What data MarkUp transmits
Only your MarkUp Pro license key — and only if you choose to enter one.
By default MarkUp makes no network requests at all. The single exception is MarkUp Pro: when you enter a license key, MarkUp sends that key (and nothing else) to our payment processor, Polar, to verify your subscription is active. No annotation data, screenshot content, page content, CSS selectors, URLs, or settings are ever transmitted to Implement AI, Polar, or anywhere outside your device. If you never enter a license key, MarkUp makes no network requests whatsoever.
Third-party services
MarkUp uses one third-party service, and only for MarkUp Pro: Polar, our payment processor and merchant of record, which verifies your license key when you enter one. There are no analytics providers, advertising networks, crash reporters, authentication services, or cloud storage connections in MarkUp.
When you export an annotation package and paste it into Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, or any other AI assistant, you are interacting with that service directly under its own terms of service and privacy policy. MarkUp’s role ends when the data reaches your clipboard or local folder.
How to remove your data
Uninstall MarkUp. Uninstalling the extension from Chrome deletes all data stored in chrome.storage.local, including all saved annotation sessions, workspace handles, and settings.
Clear extension data manually. In Chrome, go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Site settings > View permissions and data stored across sites, find MarkUp, and select “Clear data.”
Remove individual workspaces. Workspace folder handles can be removed one at a time from the Workspace Manager panel inside MarkUp. Removing a handle revokes MarkUp’s access to that folder.
MarkUp does not maintain an account or user record. There is nothing to delete server-side because no server-side data exists.
Children’s privacy
MarkUp is a professional productivity tool intended for web designers, developers, and agencies. It is not directed at children under the age of 13. MarkUp does not collect personal information from anyone, including children. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal information through MarkUp, contact us at [email protected].
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as MarkUp evolves. When we make material changes, we will update the “Effective date” at the top of this policy and note the change in the MarkUp release notes. Continued use of MarkUp after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
